Evaluation Question 3

Evaluation Question 3

With most magazines not making it onto the mainstream shelves, being associated with such media institution as Bauer, would help Diatonic become successful. When linked with such organisations there are many advantages. My magazine could run at a loss with the possibility of Bauer then asking for a percentage of the media rights. This enables them to put their mark on the magazine and most certainly improve it. Additionally my magazine then has the possibility of being distributed widely into high street stores such as WHSmiths and many people having the choice to purchase it.

However there are also many reasons why you would not like to be associated with a big company and are more in favour of self-publishing. This is because your editorial rights are not compromised by the profit your magazine is making, and paying more attention to advertisers rather than my readers in order to maximise my profits.

When choosing who to publish my magazine I also had to take into account other magazine the companies had under their name already. With Such multinational companies as IPC being associated with NME, it wouldn’t be possible to be linked with them as Diatonic is similar to NME with its content and target audience. This leads me to concluding that the best media institution to be signed to would be Bauer. Due to the fact that Bauer and IPC being major rivals in the industry and my magazine (Diatonic) being similar to NME the rivalry will spark interest as Bauer will do their upmost to overshadow IPC’s NME. Finally the financial backing that Bauer will just override a section of the editorial rights means that running at a loss for the first year before the fan base is formed will not be a problem.
